Eliana Glass

Her sparse, meditative music captures the ‘condensation of everyday life,’ says Eliana Glass. On her debut album E, her distinctive low voice and restrained piano playing set the tone. Her influences are weaved freely throughout the recordings. For example, ‘Dreams’ is a take on Annette Peacock’s track of the same name, ‘Sing Me Softly the Blues’ is a reimagination of Carla Bley’s jazz standard with lyrics adapted by Norwegian vocalist Karin Krog, and ‘Emahoy’ is a tribute to Ethiopian pianist, composer, and nun Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou. Eliana Glass was born in Australia, raised in Seattle, and based in New York. She is a graduate of The New School where she studied jazz voice with such mentors as Kris Davis, Jay Clayton, Andrew Cyrille and Ben Street. Eliana Glass learned to play the piano by ear as a child. During her studies, she started writing her own songs, and during the pandemic she felt drawn to the piano again. E was recorded with the help of specialized analog equipment in various studios with producer Francis Harris and engineer Bill Skibbe, who has worked with Steve Albini and Jack White. ‘The music sounds ageless, but her perspective as a singer-songwriter is subtly contemporary’ (Pitchfork).
