Na gitarist en zanger te zijn in de succesvolle band, Ultravox, gaat hij in 1988 definitief verder als solo-artiest, waarmee hij hits maakte als: The Man Who Sold The World en If I was. De band Ultravox had een grote invloed op de new romantic- en electropopbewegingen van begin jaren '80.
